Dr. John Sidney Hood, Jr., 96, formerly of Peachtree Street, died Monday, July 30, 2018 at Hinkle Hospice House.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am Thursday, August 2 at First Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Dr. Lee Zehmer. Burial with military rites will follow at Lexington City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home.
Dr. Hood was born March 27, 1922 in Kings Mountain, NC to Dr. John Sidney Hood, Sr. and Eloise Faison Taylor Hood. He was a graduate of The Citadel and received his Doctorate in Dentistry from UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a veteran of the US Navy and participated in 16 invasions in the South Pacific during World War II. Dr. Hood operated his dental practice in Lexington for more than 50 years. He was an Eagle Scout and founded Troop 205 at First Presbyterian Church. He served as a Deacon at his church and was a recipient of the Celtic Cross Award. Dr. Hood was also a founding member of Davidson Medical Ministries. His wife, Nell Sudduth Hood, and his sister, Elizabeth Knox Hood Summey, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughter, Betsy Hood Cowan and husband, Mark, of Lexington; his sons, John Sidney Hood, III and partner, Sally Swineford, of Georgetown, SC and Taylor Hood and wife, Anne, of Lexington; and his grandchildren, Taylor Harrison Hood, Jr. and wife, Morgan, Anna Sidney Hood and David Alexander Cowan.
