James Sewell Elliott, of Macon, GA, passed away peacefully May 19, 2015, at Carlyle Place in Macon, GA. He was a native of Augusta, Georgia and made his home in Macon. Mr. Elliott was a graduate of Augusta’s Richmond Academy and held degrees from The Citadel, Charleston, SC and the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. After graduation, he was commissioned in the United States Army and married the love of his life, Mary Jones Grace of Macon in 1947. He and Mary soon relocated to post-war Japan where he served as an Officer under the command of General Douglas McArthur, United States Army and Supreme Commander. He retired from the military with the rank of Major. He graduated from the Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University Law School in 1953. He practiced law in Macon until his retirement in 2001. Mr. Elliott was a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the Macon/Bibb Bar (past president). He was the assistant U.S. Attorney of the Middle District of Georgia and served a term as a member in the Georgia House of Representatives, Post 107. He argued several cases to the United States Supreme Court, where he litigated and argued the case of the petitioner, in a Search and Seizure case that defended and made law precedent in defense of the 4th Amendment. Mr. Justice Frankfurter concurred in the judgment of his deliberation. Among his numerous volunteer services, Mr. Elliott served as Chair of the Bibb County Republican Party, president of the Kiwanis Club of Macon, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Community Planning Council of Macon and Bibb County, member of the Board of Trustees of the Macon YMCA, vice-president of the United Givers Fund and Chairman of the annual Cancer Drive. Mr. Elliott was a member of the American Legion, the Gridiron Society of the University of Georgia and the Idle Hour Club. He was a communicant at Christ Episcopal Church. Sewell Elliott was pre-deceased by his wife, Mary Jones Grace Elliott of Macon and his son, James Sewell Elliott, Jr. (Gina); his parents, Lester Franklyn Elliott and Frances Sewell Elliott of Augusta; and his sisters, Constance Elliott Hurden of Augusta and Frances Elliott Simmons of Atlanta. He is survived by his sons, Lester Franklyn Elliott II, MD (Tracey) of Atlanta, Walter Grace Elliott of Macon, Randolph Squire Elliott (Kathy) of Winter Park, FL, and Robert Bruce Elliott (Margaret) of Macon. He is survived by his grandchildren, Mary Grace Elliott of New Hampshire, Elizabeth Ballard Elliott of Atlanta, Patrick Randolph Elliott of Indonesia, Curtis Mathew Elliott (Emily) of Winter Park, FL, Grace Alexandra Elliott, Hollye Susanna Elliott, Frances Alden Elliott, all of Atlanta, Robert Bruce Elliott, Jr. of San Diego, CA, and James Sellers Elliott of Macon. He has one great-granddaughter, Caroline Elliott (Curtis and Emily). The family wishes to thank the services of his longtime legal secretary, and dear loving friend, Mrs. Sandra Green, and his devoted caretaker, Ms. Doris Braswell. The family would also like to thank the terrific staff of Stafford Suites and Harrington House at Carlyle Place. Services for James Sewell Elliott will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, the 22nd of May, 2015. A graveside service will be held in Rose Hill Cemetery with the Very Reverend Harriette Simmons officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the home of Bruce and Margaret Elliott, 214 Country Club Road.
