Howard S J Walker, Jr, age 97, a native of Mobile, Ala., died Oct. 11, 2014. He attended Leinkauf Elementary School. He graduated from Murphy High School, The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, and Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri. During his internship in St Louis the United States declared war after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He entered the Medical Corps of the United States Army, eventually serving in Europe in the Fourth Armored Division in the Third Army under the command of General George Patton. After his military service Dr Walker returned to Missouri completing his surgical training at Washington University-Barnes Hospital and Ellis Fischel State Cancer Hospital. During this time he married Genevieve Elaine Tenold of Lake Mills, Iowa, a nurse at Barnes hospital. In 1950 they returned to Mobile where Dr Walker practiced general surgery with an emphasis on cancer treatment for over forty years. He served as the last Chief of Surgery of the Mobile General Hospital general surgery residency until the program became part of the University of South Alabama School of Medicine. He enjoyed travel including trips to the former Soviet Union, China, Antarctica, South America, Africa, Europe, and the Far East. An avid sailor throughout his life, he remained a member of the Mobile Yacht Club for over sixty years. In his younger years he enjoyed Mardi Gras as a member of the Knights of Revelry mystic society. Upon his return to Mobile in 1950 he became a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. Dr Walker was preceded in death by his parents Howard S J Walker, Sr and Mary Motte Rhett Walker, his first wife Elaine Tenold Walker, his second wife Edith Inglesby Walker, and son Gaylord Tenold Walker (Teresa). He is survived by two sons Howard S J Walker, III (Deborah) and Benjamin Rhett Walker (Paula), daughter-in-law Teresa Weeks Walker, ten grandchildren Christopher John Walker (Paige), William Rhett Walker (Amanda), Graham Seaborn Walker (Megan), Whitney Anne Walker, Carole Elaine Walker, Howard Ross Walker, Mary Rhett Walker, Ann Marie Walker, Samuel Thomas Walker, and John David Walker, and two greatgrandchildren Rhett Kellaher Walker and Elliot Mason Walker. He is also survived by his brother Rhett Pringle Walker (Corinna). The Walker family wishes to thank the physicians of Diagnostic and Medical Clinic and Mobile Infirmary Medical Center for the excellent and thoughtful care he received. Services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on Friday 17 October 2014 with a visitation at 10:00am followed by services at 12:00 noon.
