Herbert Victor Burgess, Jr., of Ocala, Fla., age 87 formerly of Fernandina Beach passed away Monday morning, March 11, 2013 in Ocala, FL. Mr. Burgess was born on February 4, 1926 in Fernandina, FL, the son of the late Herbert Victor Burgess, Sr and Myrtle Baker Burgess. He was a 1943 graduate of Fernandina Beach High School. After High School, Mr. Burgess enlisted in the United States Navy as a Sonarman, serving on the USS Sylph and USS Lloyd E Acres. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1946. Mr. Burgess then enrolled in the Citadel in South Carolina and received his Bachelors degree in Engineering. He was employed by Florida Power and Light Company from where he retired after 38 years of service. Mr. Burgess was a member of the Ashlar Masonic Temple Lodge #98, the Bahai Temple in Orlando and the Orlando Scottish Rite Bodies. Besides his parents, Mr. Burgess was predeceased by his sisters Barbara Dickens and Jeannie Skipper. He leaves behind his wife of 43 years Etta Burgess of Ocala, FL, His daughters Becky Hottell (Harry) of Fayettville, NC, Kim Grieb (Chris) of St. Cloud, FL, his sons Victor Burgess III (Kitty) of Cleveland, OH and John Wrains (Cindy) of St. Cloud, FL six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral Services was held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home with the Rev. Jackie Hayes officiating. He will be laid to rest following the service in Bosque-Bello cemetery with military and masonic honors. A reception for family and friends will follow at Oxley Heard.
