HERBERT LENNON ALLEN, 89, resident of Mayview Convalescent Center, widower of Margaret Louise Malloy Allen, died November 23, 2003 at Mayview. Born in Greenville County, SC, June 15, 1914, he was a son of the late Herbert L. Sr., and Effie Carr Allen. He was a 1931 graduate of Greenwood High School and graduated from the Citadel in 1935. Mr. Allen was employed in banking in Greenwood in the late 1930’s. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII serving in the Tank Battalion where he obtained the rank of Major and was recipient of the Silver Star Medal. He was employed by the US Army Civil Service in Ft. Knox, KY until his retirement in 1971. Mr. Allen was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award for his adult leadership in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, KY. Surviving are a son, William M. Allen of Cary, NC; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood, SC with Patricia Griffith-Fallaw officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:00 Wednesday morning.
