Harvey Merrill Dick, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on the morning of January 28, 2011, Lt. Col. Harvey Merrill Dick, US Army (Ret.), husband of Margie Murray Dick of Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Colonel and Mrs. Harvey M. Dick are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in Summerall Chapel, The Citadel Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in Summerall Chapel Tuesday, January 31, 2012, between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Colonel Dick was born August 9, 1927 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the son of Colonel James R. Dick and Werdna McCormick Dick. Harvey was a graduate of The Citadel, Class of 1953 and was a graduate of the Army Command General and Staff College. Prior to graduation from high school, Colonel Dick enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during WW II from 1945 to 1948, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. Following the war, Harvey graduated from the High School of Charleston and entered The Citadel. He was commissioned in The United States Army following Citadel graduation, Class of 1953. Upon retirement from the Army in 1977, Colonel Dick accepted the position of Assistant Commandant, The Citadel and held this position for sixteen years. Included among his numerous awards and decorations, spanning 27 years of military service, include the: Army Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, U.S. Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Gold Star, Vietnamese Staff Service Medal, Vietnamese Honor Medal 1st Class, World War II American Campaign Medal, U.S. Expeditionary Medal and Vietnamese Campaign Medal with Four Battle Stars. Included among his civilian awards and recognition are: The Citadel Alegenon Sydney Sullivan’s Award, Civitan of the Year 1967, Gainesville, FL, General Westmoreland Chapter, Military Order of World Wars, Past Master, Solomon Lodge #1, A.F.M., Scottish Rite, Omar Shrine, Past President, Chapter 28, National Sojourners, Past Commander, Ft. Moultrie Camp of Heroes 1976, Sons of the American Revolution, Washington Light Infantry-Board of Directors, Hibernian Society, The Charleston Rifle Club, Retired Officers Association (MOAA), Life Member, Association of Citadel Men, Charleston Citadel Club (Honorary Life Member), Past Scout Master for two troops in the Army, Treasurer, The Citadel Brigadier Foundation (30 yrs.), Past Member, The Citadel Board of Visitors (12 yrs.) and “The Ark”. Harvey is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margie, of Charleston, SC; one daughter, Deborah Dick Byers of North Charleston, SC; two sons, Harvey Merrill Dick, II, Citadel Class of 1978, of North Charleston, SC and LTC Harold Michael Dick, US Army (Ret.), Citadel Class of 1981 of Ft. Leavenworth, KS; four grandsons, Jason and Bryan Byers, Andrew and Harvey M. Dick, III; a granddaughter, Michelle Hogg; and a great-grandson, Isaiah Hogg. He was predeceased by his brother, James Russell Dick. Memorials may be made to the following charities: Colonel Harvey M. Dick Scholarship, Margie M.
