Harry Hodgson McNeel, (Hap), 86, a lifelong Marietta, GA, resident, passed away at his home on Monday, February 10, 2014. Harry was the son of Hazel Hodgson McNeel and Morgan Louis McNeel, Jr. whom were also deep-rooted natives of Marietta. Harry attended Haynes Elementary, Waterman Street Elementary School and one year at Marietta High School. Hap finished high school at Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL. Harry joined the U. S. Navy in1945 to serve his country during WWII. After the war ended, Hap went to The Citadel from 1947 – 1948. He transferred to UGA for the next 3 years where he met his lovely bride to be, Patricia McCormick of Columbus, GA. The two were married in Columbus, GA on April 26, 1952 at a high noon wedding, then honeymooned in Cuba. They were married for 63 wonderful years and had four children, Sterling, Steve, Peggy and Morgan. Hap was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Hap started his business in 1957 building residential homes and neighborhoods around Marietta. In 1970 he began constructing industrial buildings and developing industrial parks in Marietta, Acworth and Powder Springs. Hap was an avid outdoorsman who was happiest when he was hunting and fishing. He has been fortunate enough to travel to Alaska, Argentina, Canada and Africa for hunting and fishing adventures. His favorite sport was quail hunting, at his farm The Covey, in South Georgia. Hap was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, The Gridiron Society, First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, GA Homebuilders Assoc., Marietta Rotary Club, Marietta Country Club, GA Seniors Golf, Quail Unlimited and Tall Timbers. He served on the Board of Camp Juliette Low and Kennesaw State College. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia McNeel; his sister, Dorothy McNeel Young of Columbus, GA; children, Sterling H. McNeel, Steven F. McNeel, Peggy McNeel McKinnon and Morgan L. McNeel. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the Boy Scouts of America or Camp Juliette Low. Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta on Thursday, February 13th at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends and visitors at the Church from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.
