Harriette Whitworth Talley, 73, of Summerville, wife of Robert Thad Talley, passed away on Monday, November 25, 2013 at her residence. Friends and family may call at Summerville Baptist Church, 417 Central Avenue, Summerville on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 from 9 o’clock AM until 10:30 o’clock AM. Funeral services will begin at 11 o’clock AM. Burial will follow at Plantation Memorial Gardens, Moncks Corner. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summerville Baptist Church or Hospice Intrepid of Charleston. Harriette was born on November 13, 1940 in Greenville, SC daughter of the late Lawrence Loyd Whitworth and Frances Elizabeth (Hughes) Whitworth. She was a graduate of Paris High School in Greenville, SC. She then graduated with Honors from Furman University. She received her Master’s from The Citadel. Harriette taught math at several schools during her teaching career. She taught at Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, SC, Central High School, Knoxville, TN, Brevard High School and Brevard College, Jonesboro High School in Arkansas, Central High School in Topeka, KS, Bishop England High School in Charleston, Summerville High School, Charleston Southern University, Lieber Correctional Institution and McDougal Correctional Institution. Harriette was Chairman of the Math Department at Summerville High School. She was selected as Teacher of the Year in Dorchester County and selected to Who’s Who Teacher in America. At Brevard College, a scholarship was set up by some former students and athletes in honor of Harriette and her husband, named “Harriette & Thad Talley Annual Scholarship Fund.” At Arkansas State a $150,000 Endowment Scholarship was set up in honor of Harriette & Thad Talley. She was the official scorer for NCAA Men’s Track and Field at University of Tennessee. Harriette was a member of Summerville Baptist Church where a Sunday School Class was named in her honor with 16 young married couples and grew to around 100. It was named “Harriette Talley Sunday School Couples Class. Surviving in addition to her husband are: two sons: Rob Talley (Lynn) and Clay Talley (Micky) both of Summerville; three grandsons: Robert, William & Jake all of Summerville; two granddaughters: Elizabeth & Anna both of Summerville; one brother: Pat Whitworth (Carolyn) of Greenville, SC; one sister: Lorraine Jones (Olin) of Greenville, SC; countless nieces and nephews.
