Harold Morton Welling, 90, passed away October 9, 2018 at Backus Hospital peacefully, surrounded by his entire family. Harold was born on June 13th, 1928 in Norwich, son of the late Mollie (Levy) and Robert Welling. Harold married the love of his life, Sylvia (Katz), daughter of the late Joseph and Rose (Pollack) Katz here in Norwich.
Harold attended Norwich Free Academy and graduated from The Citadel Military College of South Carolina with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, Harold served in the United States Army Reserve. He went on to be a partner with DiCesare-Bentley-Welling Engineers Inc. before founding his own firm as a licensed professional engineer. An avid fan of baseball throughout his life, Harold befriended many young baseball players starting their careers. He frequented games at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, spending many years watching the Norwich Navigators from his unofficial seat right behind home plate. In his retirement he became a model train enthusiast, constructing an elaborate train set enjoyed by many. He was a devoted member of the Beth Jacob Synagogue.
He is survived by his two children, Owen Stephen Welling of Charleston, SC, and Abby Welling Forstall of Lexington, MA, as well as his three grandchildren, Joseph Henry Welling of Charleston, SC, Grant Walton Forstall of Charlotte, NC, and Adam Joseph Forstall of Charleston, SC.
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday October 12 at 1:30 pm, at Church and Allen, 136 Sachem Street, Norwich; with interment immediately following at First Hebrew Society, #14 RT 12, Preston.
Dates and times of Shiva will be announced at the funeral home and graveside.
