Dr. Harold McFall Hammond, Rector of Shepherd’s Heart Anglican Church, Fairfax, Virginia, died on January 11, 2015 at his home. Father Hammond served as priest and pastor for many years since his ordination in 1968 in the Episcopal Church. He was founder and rector of Shepherd’s Heart Anglican Church in Fairfax, Virginia and of Franciscan Fire, a Third Order Anglican community. He received a BA degree from The Citadel, Charleston, S.C. in 1957; a Masters of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, VA in 1968; and a Doctorate of Ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C. in 1971. Dr. Hammond served as hospital chaplain following ordination and then as clinical coun selor at pastoral institutions before entering private practice in 1973 where he served until he founded Shepherd’s Heart in 1990 as a mission to “walk with the wounded and equip the saints for ministry”. He served as the Rector of Shepherd’s Heart until his death. He also began a Third Order Franciscan community which was installed in 2001. Through the years, Dr. Hammond taught evangelism, prayer, and pastoral care to many students from a number of denominations, and he had a special ministry to pastors, ministers and their families. He is survived by his wife, Ann Hammond, who was also active with him in ministry. Dr. Hammond took a “leave of absence” from the Episcopal Church in 1973 to help found St. Peter and St. Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church in Bethesda, MD. His “spiritual fathers” were Metropolitan Anthony Bloom of London, England and Bishop Bazil, both bishops in the Russian Orthodox Church. Dr. Hammond returned to the Episcopal Church in 1987 and founded a mission church in Maryland. In 1991, he moved from Potomac, Maryland to Fairfax, Virginia to establish Shepherd’s Heart and Franciscan Fire where he and his ministers served under the Anglican Province in North America. Funeral Services will be held at Truro Anglican Church, 10520 Main Street, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030 on Friday, January 16, 2015. There will be a viewing in the church main sanctuary from 10 to 10:45 a.m. A Homecoming Celebration Service will be held in the main sanctuary starting at 11 a.m. Following the Celebration Service, there will be a reception downstairs at Truro Anglican Church. Funeral Services will be held at Truro Anglican Church, 10520 Main Street, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030 on Friday, January 16, 2015. There will be a viewing in the church main sanctuary from 10 to 10:45 a.m. A Homecoming Celebration Service will be held in the main sanctuary starting at 11 a.m. Following the Celebration Service, there will be a reception downstairs at Truro Anglican Church.
