Harold Edward Hyde, Jr., of Southern Pines, N.C., died peacefully on May 9, 2011 after a wonderful weekend visiting with family and friends. He was able to gently talk to his 18 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 4 children and their spouses and his beloved wife Betsy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2011 at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines. A reception will follow immediately in the church fellowship hall. Hal was born September 1, 1931 in Atlanta, GA. He was the son of Harold Edward Hyde Sr. and Martha Magill. Hal married Elizabeth Taylor Gilmour ‘Betsy’ of Charlotte, NC on September 2, 1961. Hal received his B. S. from The Citadel Military College in Charleston, SC, his Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, VA, and his Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, IL. He served pastorates in Norfolk, VA, Lakeland and St. Petersburg, FL. He retired after serving 19 years at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, Southern Pines. The following 10 years were spent doing interim ministries in Fayetteville, Morehead City, and Elizabeth Town. Dr. Hyde served as a captain in the United States Air Force from 1954-1957. He was active in the church at large and was the Moderator of the Fayetteville Presbytery. Active in the community he served on the Boards of; Sandhills Hospice, Bethany House, Pinehurst Forum, Sandhills Coalition, and the United Way of Moore County. He was Chairman, Head Start for Sandhills Kiwanis and the Governor’s Task Force for Healthy Carolinians. He received Sandhills Kiwanis Club Builders Cup Award, the Rotary Four Way Service Award, and United Way Cornerstone Award. He received Governor recognition for service on health and race relations. He is survived by his wife Betsy, four children, Taylor Hyde Swink (Robert) of Greensboro, Mimi Hyde Zaytoun (Henry) of Raleigh, Sally Hyde Mueller (Joe) of Charlotte, and Ted Hyde (Tara) of High Point: 18 grandchildren, Shelby Anderson (Richard), Bowen, and Morgan Swink, Henry, Mary Lanier, Reeves, Taylor, Clare, Martha, Rachel, and Margaret Zaytoun, Lee, Cole, and Tate Mueller, Ashlyn, Carson, Evan, and Riley Hyde, and one great-grandchild, Bryce Anderson; one sister, Martha Hyde Wynn (Jack); David and Peggy Gilmour, Monroe Gilmour and Fern Martin, Gina Gilmour, many nieces and nephews and his special dog, Georgia. Hal was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, his sister-in-law, Ethel Gilmour Uribe, and nephew Jonathon Gilmour.
