H. Mitchell Abernethy passed away Monday, June 23. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his memory be made to Trout Unlimited, Chattooga River Chapter, c/o Tom McInnis, 206 Wescott Drive, Clemson, SC 29631. Mitch was born on Oct. 24, 1922, in Lombard, Ill., to Harry and Florence Abernethy. He attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Mitch served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He married Barbara Jane Phillips of Glen Ellyn, Ill. Mitch’s 30-year international career with Union Carbide took him and his family to Southeast Asia, East Africa and Europe. Mitch’s passions were physical fitness, sports, adventure and the love of the outdoors. Sailing with his family and the love of the ocean was a constant for most of his life. Fly fishing became his particular passion in his later years. Mitch is survived by his wife, Barbara; his three daughters, Sharon Scott (Graham), Catherine Wisner (Jim) and Alexandra Heijkoop (Aart); and his grandchildren, Siobhan Kitchen, Meagan Scott, Stephanie Wisner, Douglas Scott, Roxanne Wisner, Natalie Heijkoop and Mitch Heijkoop
