Lt. Colonel (Ret.) H. Lee Green, Jr., 93, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2015 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Orlando, Florida, he was the son of the late H. Lee Green and Annie Gladys Woody. He also was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Marie J. Lindsay (Lynn), of Virginia Beach and his sister, Ann, of Tallahassee, Florida.
A 1943 graduate of The Citadel, he also graduated from Baylor University with a Masters degree in Hospital Administration. During World War II, he served at Halloran General Hospital in Staten Island, New York, where he met his wife, Lynn, while she was stationed there as an Army nurse. During his Army career, he served in Korea and in Vietnam, where he established and commanded the 24th Evacuation Hospital. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Legion of Merit.
After 21 years in the Army, he retired in Norfolk, Connecticut and was the Hospital Administrator at Winsted Memorial Hospital for twelve years, followed by retirement in Virginia Beach. He was a member of Broad Bay Country Club where he enjoyed golf, especially his time with the Golden Oldies golf group. Beginning as Captain of the Citadel tennis team, he continued his lifelong love for the game, and he especially enjoyed his membership at the Virginia Beach Tennis and Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of nine years, Kay; and his five children from his first marriage, Catherine Green, Virginia Beach, Lynn Haw and husband George of Richmond, James Green and wife Roxanne of Massachusetts, Dr. John Green and wife Ame of Charlotte, North Carolina, Stephen Green of Bolton, Massachusetts; and 13 precious grandchildren, George, Lindsay, Jennifer, James, Benjamin, Hannah, Jack, Will, Hayden, Harrison, Haley, Steve and Ashley.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was devoted to his family. He lived his life with honor, integrity and a love that will continue to be a special part of all our lives. He was especially proud of his service in the military.
We would like to thank Lee’s nurses and healthcare providers at Cancer Specialists of Tidewater, Comfort Care Home Health and Hospice and Home Instead for the wonderful care and support they provided. A military graveside service will be held at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Barrington, Rhode Island. Friends and family will be received at the Watson Raymond Funeral Home in Barrington. The H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Virginia is in charge of local arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lee’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
