Herbert Eugene “Gene” Briggs, 77, of Sumter, husband of Nancy Pollard Briggs, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at his home. Born in Birmingham, Ala., he was a son of the late Herbert Ernest Briggs and Ruth Tharpe Briggs Jones. Mr. Briggs was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. He was the founder of Boy Scout Troop No. 86. He was the vice-president of engineering and sales for Briggs Air Systems and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two sons, William Scott Briggs of Sumter and Christopher Tovey Briggs of Colorado; a daughter, Katherine Briggs Young of Sumter; a step-daughter, Amanda Dameron Barham and her husband, Seth, of Athens, Ga.; a sister, Elaine Briggs Meshad of Sarasota, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Dr. John Barr, the Rev. Marcus Kaiser and the Rev. Charlie F. Walton Jr. officiating.
