Guy L. Hecker, Jr., ’54

Major General Guy L. Hecker Jr., USAF (Ret.), of Alexandria, Va., passed away on May 17, 2026. He was 94 years old. Born on March 6, 1932, in Louisville, Kentucky, Guy moved with his family to Mobile, Alabama, where he was raised on Springhill Avenue by his mother, aunt, and grandmother. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1949 and attended Marion Military Institute. Guy then traveled to Charleston and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors as a distinguished military graduate from The Citadel Military College of South Carolina. For higher education he received a master’s degree in International Relations from The George Washington University (1972), completed the management development program at Harvard Business School, and was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from The Citadel.

General Hecker was commissioned through the Air Force ROTC program at The Citadel. He earned his pilot wings in November 1955, at Webb AFB, Texas. He was one of the first air training officers in the new U.S. Air Force Academy and was made an honorary member of the Class of 1959, the first graduating class at the Academy. His flying career began piloting F-100 Super Sabres with the 55th Tactical Fighter Squadron in England, then subsequently serving as a staff officer and instructor.

In Vietnam, he flew 170 combat missions in the F-100 with the 90th Tactical Fighter Squadron (“Pair-O-Dice”) out of Bien Hoa Air Base. His gallantry in action earned him the Silver Star (including for a daring night napalm and bomb mission supporting troops under attack) and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also served as executive officer to the director of the Tactical Air Control Center at 7th Air Force Headquarters.

For his gallantry in action and outstanding service, Gen. Hecker was awarded some of the nation’s highest military honors, including:

The Silver Star (for conspicuous gallantry in action over Southeast Asia)

The Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster)

The Distinguished Flying Cross

The Bronze Star Medal

The Meritorious Service Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster)

The Air Medal (with nine Oak Leaf Clusters)

The Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross (with Palm)

Subsequent commands included the 528th Bombardment Squadron (FB-111s), roles as deputy commander for operations and maintenance with the 380th Bombardment Wing, commander of the 509th Bombardment Wing, and commander of the 45th Air Division. Later Pentagon assignments involved M-X (MX missile) matters and, as a Major General (promoted 1980), Director of the Office of Legislative Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. He retired in October 1982, after more than 27 years of service with over 10,000 flying hours (including 211 combat hours).

After military service, General Hecker became a prominent defense consultant, serving as President of Stafford, Burke and Hecker, Inc., and later as a board director and business leader (including roles with 8×8 Inc. and others). He remained deeply involved with The Citadel and Marion Military Institute alumni and advisory efforts. He built a notable home on one of George Washington’s original farms in Mount Vernon, Virginia, overlooking the Potomac River. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Frances of 65 years, they married in 1956. Frances was from the Mississippi Delta, he courted her creatively as a pilot while she was a stewardess. General Hecker was also preceded in death by son Michael. He is survived by his son Scott, daughter Karen, son-in-law Owen P. Honors Jr. (retired U.S. Navy Captain), grandson Guy Hecker III, and granddaughters Emma and Sophia. In his later years, his best and most loyal companion was his Dog Cuddles, but he was also fortunate to have other family and a wide circle of friends, comrades, and admirers.

The General continued his “need for speed” after retirement, navigating his speedboat (named Afterburner) up and down the Atlantic coast, and driving an enviable series of high-performance sports cars.

General Hecker exemplified courage, leadership, dedication to service, and a lifelong commitment to education, family, and country. His wit, energy, and insight inspired many well into his later years. He will be remembered as a true American hero, a devoted husband and father, and a larger-than-life figure who lived with honor and vitality. His energy, wit, and dedication to service left a legacy. He will be deeply missed. One of his favorite pranks was to encourage overnight visitors to enjoy a few cocktails, and as the night wound down show them to their bedroom where he had previously placed a clock which was hidden undetectable in the box spring. The alarm would be set for 2:00 or 3:00 AM and instead of an alarm going off, a melodic woman’s voice would call out “Hey Baby wake up, Come on Baby dance with me”, over and over. Confused Guests would search under the bed and find nothing. They would frantically try every switch on the walls only to return frustrated to bed maybe placing a pillow over their heads

to endure the incessant invitation to dance until dawn. In the morning General Hecker would come down to greet his guest with a mischievous smile, a good morning and would ask how everyone had slept.

Funeral services with full military honors and burial details will be announced by the family in the near future.

The General’s favorite charities were St Jude and Tunnels to Towers, he would smile if you made a contribution in his name.
