Grady Philip Hedrick Jr. COLUMBIA – Services for Grady Philip Hedrick, Jr., 78, will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Christ Chapel of Washington Street United Methodist Church, followed by a private burial in Lancaster Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Washington Street United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 1401 Washington Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Mr. Hedrick died Monday, August 20, 2007. Born in Columbia on May 29, 1929, he was the son of the late Grady Philip Hedrick and Edna West Hedrick. He was predeceased by his wife of 17 years, Ann Steele Hedrick. Educated in Columbia City Schools, he graduated from The Citadel where he was a member of the Summerall Guards. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. A lifelong member of Washington Street United Methodist Church, he was a founding member of the Traxler Class and served on the Official Board. He was a member and past president of Washington Street UMC Men’s Club, Five Points Merchants Association, and Five Points Civitan Club. He owned and operated Hedrick’s Men Shop in Five Points until May 1986 and retired from South Carolina Department of Social Services in 2004. After retirement, he enjoyed square dancing, shagging and was a member in the Star Promenaders Square Dance Club. He was active with American Legion Post 7 in Lexington and was named Vice Commander in July. Surviving are his sister, Peggy Hedrick Weston of Columbia; son, G. Phillip Hedrick, III and his wife, Robin of West Columbia; daughter, Margie Smith and her husband, Vincent of Houston, Texas; stepdaughters, Mary Ann Betenbaugh and her husband, Tommy of Columbia and Allison Boggs of Columbia; stepson, William Boggs of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Megan Hedrick, Daniel, Apphia, Autumn, and Matthew Smith, Amy and Sara Betenbaugh, Maxwell Kampel; niece, Lou Rainey and her husband, Robert; nephews, Tom Weston and his wife, Diane, and Mark Weston and his wife, Sallee.
