George William Yount, 81, of Statesville, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010. George was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Statesville and was the son of the late Harold Horace Yount and Margery Rebecca White Yount. He graduated from Statesville High School in 1947, where he lettered in football, played saxophone in the band, was a member of the football and basketball teams, glee club, Hi-Y, drama club, Blue and Gray, Junior Science Club, and Booster’s Club. In 1951 he graduated First Lieutenant from The Citadel, in Charleston, S.C., with a B.S. in Chemistry. While at The Citadel, he was designated a Distinguished Military student, member of the swim team, Knox Chemical Club, Charlotte-Citadel Club, and American Chemical Society. Following graduation from The Citadel, George entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. He was deployed to Korea in 1952 where he was wounded in battle. He was honorably discharged following his service in the Korean War, and decorated with the Purple Heart. In 1956, George began his career as a financial advisor/stock broker with Interstate Securities. He was office manager and Vice President of the Statesville office where he served 50 years. On June 10, 1956, George married the late Anne Bristol Cameron Yount, who passed away on Dec. 10, 2003. He was a lifelong, dedicated member of First A.R.P. Church, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, member of the choir, and Sunday school teacher. George had many activities and interests. He served as president of the Statesville Swim Team. He served on the Board of Directors of the Statesville YMCA and the Board of Trustees for Iredell Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Jaycees and Kiwanis Club. He was one of the founding committee members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 609. George was a water sports enthusiast, enjoying swimming, scuba diving, wind surfing, and skiing. He enjoyed horticulture and was especially gifted with African violets and orchids. He was an avid sports fan, diligently following his beloved UNC Tar Heels. Most importantly, George was a loving and compassionate friend, husband, father and grandfather. George is survived by a daughter, Margery Cameron “”Cammie”” Yount Warren and husband, Scott, of Raleigh; two sons, George William “”Bill”” Yount Jr. of Venice, Calif., Harold Arthur Whitten Yount and wife, Crystal, of Statesville; three brothers, Harold Alexander Yount, Arthur White Yount and Robert Whitten Yount; a sister, Marion Ruth Yount Sams; and six grandchildren, John Michael Foti, Will Foti, Nicholas Yount, Michaela Yount, Alexander Warren and Anne Cameron Warren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne Blair Yount Foti and by a sister, Winnie Frances Yount. A memorial service to celebrate the life of George Yount will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at First A.R.P. Church with Dr. Charles Steele and the Rev. Robert Sherer officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Saturday evening at Nicholson Funeral Home. A private family burial will be conducted before the memorial service. Memorials may be made to First A.R.P.
