Surrounded by his loving family, his books, his newspapers, and in the home by the ocean that he loved, George Thomas ‘Sonny’ Hagan, Jr, died peacefully on February 16, 2018.
For many years, he and his brother owned and operated Rollins and Hagan Insurance Company in Lake City and Johnsonville, South Carolina. After a move to the Grand Strand in the early 1970’s, he and his brother developed multiple residential properties in the Surfside Beach and Murrells Inlet areas, and he continued to work in real estate until his retirement from Fitzgerald Realty in 2007. After retirement, he enjoyed his family, his friends, walks on the beach with golf club in hand, and viewing any game or match the sports networks could offer up. As much as he loved his family, Sonny may have loved his animals more. In later years, you never saw him without his best friend Ella Sue, with her being just the last of countless four-legged friends that were a constant in his life.
Born in Lake City, South Carolina, on December 27, 1926, Sonny was the son of the late Sadie Best Hagan of Allendale, South Carolina and George Thomas Hagan of Due West, South Carolina. He was a graduate of The Citadel and a WWII veteran and was married to Susan Hundley Hagan for 49 years, until her death in 2012. In addition to his wife, a sister, Sarah Hagan Rollins and a brother, William Porcher Hagan, predeceased him. Surviving are his three children: Susan Maxwell Hickam (Tom) of Surfside, Eleanor Whitlock Floyd (Robert) of Barnwell, and George Thomas Hagan, III, of Atlanta; his grandchildren Chantsie Whitlock Pickelsimer (Karl) of Barnwell, Edward King Whitlock of Naples, Italy, Sunni Maxwell O’Neal Fisher (Jamie) of Parsons, Tennessee, Robert Hunter Maxwell (Lindsey) of Midland, Michigan; and great grandchildren Ava O’Neal, Noah Maxwell, Madison Maxwell, Parker Maxwell, Hagan Pickelsimer, and Jace Pickelsimer. His Rollins “children”, Jimmy, George, Roz, Shay, and Glaze, also survive him. Special thanks to the staffs of Griswold Home Care and Amedisys Hospice for their loving care, and to Kristen in particular, unending gratitude. With George Rollins and Mary Eaton, they made Sonny’s last years happy and full.
A Graveside Service will be held at Belin United Methodist Church Cemetery, 4182 Highway 17 Business, Murrells Inlet.
