George Homer McDaniel, Jr., 88, of Orangeburg, SC, passed away March 19, 2019. He was the husband of Virginia Bourne McDaniel.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 pm, March 22, 2019, at Church of The Redeemer, 1606 Russell Street, Orangeburg, SC, with the Very Reverend John Burwell officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. At other times, friends may call at the residence.

George was born in Florence, SC, son of George Homer McDaniel, Sr. and Enid Carr McDaniel. He graduated from McClenaghan High School, Class of 1947, and graduated from the Citadel, Class of 1952, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He received a Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Artillery and was called to active duty in the Korean War. He was a graduate of the Artillery and Guided Missile School at Fort Bliss, TX. George was a volunteer participant in the Atomic Bomb test “operation upshot knothole” at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada, and was then deployed to Korea with the Battery A 78th AAA Gun Batallion. After being discharged from the military service, George was employed by CIT Financial Services in Florence, Charleston, and Orangeburg.

On May 19, 1956, he married Virginia Ann Bourne of Georgetown, SC. George obtained his Pilot’s License in 1955 and was an Aerial Photographer. For over sixty years, he pursued a deep interest in photography of families, landscapes, and wildlife. George retired from First National Bank, now South State Bank, in Orangeburg, as a Senior Vice President. He was a long time member of Church of the Redeemer in Orangeburg, where he served on the vestry and was Junior and Senior Warden. He was also a charter member of the Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association, a member of the Citadel Brigadier Club, the Association of Citadel Alumni, and served as the Citadel Foundation Class Chairman for over ten years.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years of the home; two daughters, Nancy McDaniel Douglas (Terry) of Lexington, SC and Leslie McDaniel Smith (Vernon) of Orangeburg;; three granddaughters, Meagan Elizabeth Douglas and Courtney Mercer Douglas, both of Lexington, SC and Virginia Ann Smith of Orangeburg, SC. He was predeceased by his son, George Homer McDaniel, III.
