George C. Strickland, 77, of Johns Island, joined our Lord Jesus Christ and God the Father on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, following a cardiovascular event ten days earlier. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rachel, his two children, Brandy Keener (John) and Lee Strickland (Nicole), his brother A. L. Strickland, MD, and his beloved grandchildren, Kendall, Austin, Cary Ellis, Jacob, Ty, and EliYah. George was born on October 8, 1939, to the late A. Lee and Jessie G. Strickland in Loris, SC, where his mother taught school, and his father owned and operated a furniture store and a family farm. George moved to Charleston, SC, upon graduating from The Citadel in 1961. As an agency owner for some 50 years, Mr. Strickland gained substantial respect as a local pioneer of sorts in the marine insurance industry which became his specialty in the mid 1980’s. Well known for his outgoing personality, George lived a full and rewarding life and built many friendships while doing what he loved, including offshore fishing, golf, and various outdoor adventures true to the southern heritage. He was a fine golfer in his younger years, and many of his friends have fond memories of times fishing aboard his vessels and socializing at the docks. George was very social-a “talker”-and a veritable library of southern colloquialisms. At times, he was known to be “busier than a one-armed paper hanger.” Most of all, George was devoted to his wife and children and labored in his later years to care for Rachel. A man of resolute faith, George C. Strickland loved Jesus and cared for the nation of Israel. Never did a harder shell have a softer center. Blessed are those who knew him. He will not be forgotten. George was ready to meet the Lord when he passed. We will miss him more than words can say. A visitation will be from 5-7 PM Monday, August 28, 2017, at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island Chapel. The funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at James Island Baptist Church, 2023 Wappoo Drive, Charleston, SC 29412.
