Spencer, Jr., a well-known local physician, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 at Rowan Regional Medical Center, as a result of an automobile accident. Dr. Spencer, 86, of 803 Confederate Avenue, retired in 1988 after 43 years of medical practice.Born Aug. 15, 1921 in Salisbury, Dr. Spencer was the oldest son of the late Dr. F.B. Spencer, Sr. and Olive Abernethy Spencer. He was a graduate of The Citadel at Charleston, S.C. and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Following internship at the New York City Hospital, he served for two years in several General Hospitals of the U. S. Army Medical Corps, and was discharged with the rank of Captain.In 1945, he opened an office with his father at 820 W. Henderson Street and was in practice at that location with Drs. Allen and John Robert Spencer, until his retirement.In 1948, he returned to Salisbury in general practice until 1951, when he began an internal medicine residency and fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Spencer was a member of the Rowan Medical Society, NC Medical Society and American Medical Association. He served as Chief of Staff and as head of Internal Medicine at Rowan Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the Board of Health of Rowan County for many years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.Dr. Spencer had an enduring interest in aviation, having soloed in 1962 and was an active pilot for many years.In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Lewis Spencer, who died Jan. 23, 2005. He is survived by two sons, Frederick B. Spencer, III of Celebration, Fla. and Mark K. Spencer of Salisbury; brothers, Dr. John Robert Spencer and James Edward (Pat) Spencer, all of Salisbury and two grandchildren, Madeline and Samuel Spencer.Service: A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at City Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Stephen D. Haines, pastor of First United Methodist Church. Visitation: A brief visitation will follow the service.
