Col. (Ret.) Fletcher B. Smith, Jr., of Huntsville, passed away Monday. Fletcher was born in Georgetown, SC. He graduated from Barnwell High School, Barnwell, SC in 1953 and received his BS degree in Electrical Engineering at The Citadel, Charleston, SC in 1957. Upon graduation, he entered the US Army and served on active duty for ten years. He remained in the US Army Reserves and retired with the rank of Colonel. He moved to Destin, FL after retiring from the US Army Missile Command in 1988, to pursue his hobby of sailing. He was always a lover of the beach, having spent a large part of his early years at Pawley’s Island and Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. Fletcher was a hobby enthusiast throughout his lifetime, obtaining his Amateur Radio License at the age of 13. This hobby, sailing and building electronics were a major part of his life. He also enjoyed photography and music, particularly jazz artists, with Louie Armstrong a special favorite. He returned to Huntsville to be closer to family in August 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher B. Smith Sr. and Hattie Cooper Smith. He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Smith of New York, NY and husband, Hammou Sahbi of Morocco, and Beth Smith of Huntsville; granddaughter, Natalie Smith of Huntsville; ex-wife and mother of Cindy and Beth, Martha Sue Binner of Huntsville; aunt, Sudie Payne of Charleston, SC; many cousins in South Carolina; a host of special friends in Florida and his long time loving caregivers in Huntsville. A military graveside service will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Maple Hill Cemetery with Dr. Sam Hopson officiating. LAUGHLIN SERVICE FUNERAL HOME is assisting the family.
