Eugene Walter, Jr., of Orangeburg, died March 16, 2010. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 18, at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. He was married to the late Charlotte Willard Walter for over 59 years. Born May 24, 1927, the son of the late Eugene R. Walter and Margaret Cleckley Walter. He was raised near Cope, SC, and graduated from Cope High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944. Upon graduation from The Citadel in 1950 he was commissioned an “Officer of Marines” and served during the Korean War era. A commercial contractor for over 50 years, he was a Licensed Professional Engineer. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Orangeburg and a Paul Harris Fellow. Active in the Citadel Brigadier Club, he was a strong supporter of his Alma Mater. As a member of the Episcopal Church of The Redeemer for over 35 years, he served as a member of the Vestry, Lay Reader, Usher, and Rector search committees. He is survived by his children, Eugene Walter III (Margaret) of Norway, Louis Walter (Laura) of Lexington, Deborah Walter of Beaufort and Charlotte Ellard (Stanley) of Roswell, Ga.; 13 grandchildren, Christal W. Newton (Thomas), Zachry, Deuter, Brekly, Britin, Clarin, Tierah, Fernae, Rhoxie, Weaver, Fraser, Walter and Aeevry Ellard; one great-grandson, Connor Newton and two nephews and one niece. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at DUKES-HARLEY FUNERAL HOME. At other times friends may call at the residence and Funeral Home.
