Eric Charles Cranston, 72, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026. Born on December 7, 1953, in Oakland, California, to the late Frederick and Elizabeth Cranston, Eric grew up in San Leandro and graduated from Bishop O’Dowd High School before embarking on a life defined by dedicated public service, deep loyalties, and lifelong friendships.
Eric was a proud member of The Citadel Class of 1975, where he played football. His bond with his alma mater remained strong throughout his life; he continually supported the campus and proudly made the cross-country trip earlier this year to attend his 50th reunion, reconnecting with the brotherhood he held so dear.
His commitment to serving others led him to a distinguished career in law enforcement. Eric served as a police officer with the Richmond Police Department before joining the County of San Francisco as an Institutional Police Officer at San Francisco General Hospital. Known for his work ethic and willingness to step up, he frequently took on extra shifts to support his team before retiring in 2015 after nearly three decades at SFGH.
After living for many years in Alameda, Eric retired to Mariposa, California, where he embraced mountain life and embedded himself in the heart of the community.
Beyond his career in uniform, Eric was known for his sharp sense of humor and was rarely caught without a joke ready to share. He was a history buff, a devoted collector, and a passionate sports enthusiast-always cheering on his beloved Citadel Bulldogs. Most importantly, Eric was loyal to those he cared about, never missing a family event and standing as a true brother to his wide circle of friends.
Eric is survived by his sister, Carolyn Lott; his nieces and nephew; and a cherished group of great-nieces and great-nephews who will miss his wit and presence.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a short memorial service in remembrance of Eric on Friday, October 2nd at 2:30 p.m. at Turlock Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to The Citadel Alumni Association.
