CMDR Elias Venning, Jr., USN (Ret.) of Atrium Manressa Retirement Center, Annapolis, MD died December 8, 2009. He was born June 1, 1926 in Charleston, SC, son of Elias Venning and Rachael Doyle Venning. He was a graduate of Charleston High School Class of 1942 and attended The Citadel for three years. He was then appointed by Rep. Mendel Rivers to the U.S. Naval Academy. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1949. His first tour of duty was aboard the ill-fated USS Hobson. Fortunately, he was reassigned prior to its sinking. He was appointed by the U.S. Navy to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received his master’s degree in naval architecture and marine engineering. After a three year tour of duty at the U.S. Navy Drydock in Sasebo, Japan, he was transferred to the Taylor Model Basin in Washington, DC to work under Admiral Hyman Rickover in the development of the nuclear submarine. Following additional tours of duty, he retired and worked with private corporations in the development of underwater rescue operations. He was married to the former, Elizabeth Donnelly of Bala Cynwyd, PA in 1949 and she survives him. He is also survived by a sister, Louise Venning McMurry of Shelby, NC and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held at a later date and his remains placed in the columbarium at U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Information by JAMES A. MCALISTER, INC. Tags: 1946
