Elbert Copeland Blackwell, Jr. Mr. Blackwell, 79, of Charlotte, died Monday November 15, 2004 at Presbyterian Hospital. A service in celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday at Heritage Funeral Home, 4431 Old Monroe Road. Mr. Blackwell was born on February 2, 1925 in Spartanburg, SC to the late Elbert and Margaret Blackwell, Sr. He attended The Citadel until called to serve in the Navy Aviation during World War II. Later he received his bachelor’s degree from Furman University. While attending the University, Mr. Blackwell was a radio announcer for WSPA and an amateur radio operator and electronics enthusiast. He later worked with computers and retired as a systems analyst from IBM. Recently he shared the love of classical music with his son and grandsons, and spent time assisting with the Barringer Elementary School and Sedgefield Middle School chess clubs. He also was a member of the Charlotte Chess club. Mr. Blackwell was very loving and supportive to his family. Survivors include son, Copeland Blackwell, III and wife Sheila of Charlotte; step-daughter, Virginia Harshman of Long Beach, WA; former wife, Anne Miller of Attapulgus, GA; and grandchildren Kevin and Andrew Blackwell.
