Mr. Edwin R. “Tink” Sanders, 83, of Main Street, New Ellenton, SC, entered into rest July 27, 2009. Graveside Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock in Bethany Cemetery, Aiken. Father Jeffrey F. Kirby officiating. Mr. Sanders was born October 17, 1925 in Ellenton, SC to the late Russell and Mary Agnes Sanders. He was always known as Tink, a name given to him by his baby nurse because he loved playing with Tinker Toys. Tink graduated from Ellenton High School and after attending the Citadel for nine months, he was drafted into the US Army in World War II where he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant serving with Company K 225th Infantry of the 63rd Division. He was injured in the Eastern Theater and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After his discharge, he returned to the Citadel to complete his education majoring in Business Administration. Tink’s family was one of the first to move to New Ellenton in 1951. He managed the installation of the first water system for New Ellenton, retired from the A. J. Kellos Construction and took over operation of his father’s business, Sanders Merchandise Mart in New Ellenton until 1990. Tink was a past Chairman of the Board of Aiken County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission and past Chairman of the New Ellenton Public Works Commission. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Sabra T. Sanders; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Janet McClain, New Ellenton; a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and John Clarke, Dallas, TX; three grandchildren, Christopher McClain, Kelly McClain Key and her husband, Chris and Clancey Clarke. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to a favorite charity.
