Edward R. Crilly, 88, of Fairfax, Va., died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. He was born in Elizabeth, N.J., son of the late John J. Crilly and Helen O’Brien. A 1944 graduate of the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., he was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving as a lieutenant in the 11th Airborne Division. After his military service, he resided in Elizabeth, N. J., where he was an engineer for Elizabethtown Gas. In 1971, along with his wife, Muriel, and family he relocated to Vermont where he owned and operated Heritage Acres Campground in Grafton, Vt. He was also employed by the Public Service Department of the State of Vermont as the Gas Safety Engineer. After retirement, he lived in Hendersonville for 15 years and has resided in Northern Virginia since 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Muriel, who died in 2000. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, James of Hendersonville, John of Bennington, Vt., and Joseph of Sea Girt, N.J. He is survived by three daughters: Gail Crilly Short of Langdon, N.H., Debra Crilly Colman of Centreville, Va., and Sharon Crilly of Sterling, Va.; four sons: Mark of Lynchburg, Va.; David of Centreville, Va.; Kevin of Berkeley, Calif.; and Brian of Sanford; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a brother, Alfred, of Stroudsburg, Pa., and a sister, Margaret, of the Sisters of Mercy, Plainfield, N.J. He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, where a Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be at the Western North Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
