Edward Mood “Ned” Jones III, of Greenville, SC, died July 7, 2014 at his home on Beacon Lane in Greenville, surrounded by loving family. Born in Walterboro July 29, 1925, he spent his childhood in Orangeburg, SC before moving to Barnwell and later Summerville. Ned attended the Citadel before joining the Naval Air Corps at age 18, completing flight training in Pensacola and serving in the Pacific Theater with the VPB-109, Crew 5 on a PB4Y-2 Privateer until the war ended. Ned was married to the late May Brinkley Jones of Barnwell in 1947, and later to Penelope Stovall Jones. He was the son of Howell Carlisle Jones and Elizabeth Fuller Jones and is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Jones of Charleston; his brothers, Howell C. ‘Nick’ Jones, Jr. of Huspa Plantation, and Bernard L. ‘Boney’ Jones of Summerville; his daughters, Linda E. Jones and Jenifer J. Stone of Summerville, Libby J. West of Folly Beach, Jane J. Pages of Charleston, SC; and step-son, Michael Gibson of Gastonia, NC. He had nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 3 PM on Sat., Jul. 12 at the Citadel Chapel and gathering afterward on Folly Beach at the home of Libby J.
