Edward Blohme Lockwood, 91, of Charleston, husband of Dorothy McAlister Lockwood, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Born in Charleston, SC on September 29, 1920, Eddie was the second son of The Honorable Henry Whilden Lockwood, Mayor of Charleston and Emma Blohme Lockwood. After graduating from Charleston High School in 1937, he entered the Citadel where he excelled in sports and academics. He graduated in 1941 with honors and received the American Legion Memorial Saber given to a cadet who attained highest academic and sports honors, the equivalent to an Academic All-American today. He entered the US Army in 1942 as a volunteer after hearing of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served as a radar officer on Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for 2 years and then as an intelligence officer on Okinawa, Japan for three years. He returned to Charleston after the war and held several positions until settling into a career as a real estate agent for the Joseph P. Riley Agency. He married Dorothy McAlister in 1959 and they were happily married until her death in 2010. He was a longtime member of the Citadel Brigadier Club, a past president of the Hibernian Society, member of the German Friendly Society, and the Sons of Colonial Wars. He is a former member of the Carolina Yacht Club and the Exchange Club where he was in charge of the animal exhibit for the Coast Carolina Fair for many years. He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Lockwood Lipman, her husband Ross, and their children, Cecilia McAlister Lipman and Samuel Whilden Lipman. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Lockwood Breazeale, his brother-in-law John Floyd Dunbar, and his sister in law, Inga McAlister and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife, his brother, Henry Whilden Lockwood, his sister, Louise Lockwood Cornwell, his brother-in-law William Murr Cornwell, his sister-in-law Mary McAlister Dunbar and his brother-in-law James A. McAlister, Jr. The relatives and friends of Edward B. Lockwood are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 1:00 PM Friday, November 4, 2011, at the Summerall Chapel on The Citadel Campus. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends this Thursday evening between 5:00 and 7:00 PM at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home 1620 Savannah Highway.
