E. L. “Hank” Foster Jr. August 3, 1916- April 15, 2008 COLUMBUS, GA- Hank Foster, 91, of Columbus, GA. died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at his residence. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2008 at Parkhill Cemetery with Dr. Hal Brady and Rev. Helen Berenthien officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Foster Sr., he was born in Knoxville, TN. on August 3, 1916. The youngest of five sons, he was preceded in death by his older brothers, Cliff, Clarence, Joe and Luke Foster, all of Knoxville, TN. A 1941 graduate of The Citadel, Hank lettered in football, basketball and track and field and is a member of the Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating, he entered active service with the U.S. Army during World War II. While stationed briefly at Fort Benning, he met his future wife, Elizabeth “Libba” Watkins. While stationed in Europe, he attained the rank of Major and was awarded the French Cross and the Bronze Star. After the war, Hank married and settled in Columbus, where he worked for The Auto Supply Company and then for Morton Machine Works from which he retired at the age of 80. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and a former member of the Muscogee Lions Club. An avid golfer until the age of 85, he was a former member of the Columbus Country Club. Other than his parents and brothers, he was preceded in death by his wife, Libba He is survived by his daughter, Beth Thomas and her husband Reid, and by his son, Joe Foster, as well as three grandchildren, Lee Tate of Birmingham, AL., Luther Tate of Gulf Shores, AL. and Sara Foster of Waynesville, MO.; one great grandson. He is also survived by his sisters in law, Frances Smith and Totsy Watkins and his brother in law, Harold Watkins and his wife, Pat.
