Edward “Hugh” Marriott, of Morristown, N.J., passed away at home under hospice care on Wednesday, 11/3/2021. He was 87 years old. Hugh was a revered husband, father, grandfather, friend, poet, and golfer extraordinaire. The youngest of six, born in Augusta GA (home of the Master’s), he graduated in 1956 from The Citadel with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1970, an MBA was earned from Columbia University. He met his future wife in Vermont, settling in Morristown in 1969. Hugh was captain of The Citadel golf club and the first American to win the Trinidad Open in the 1950s while serving on a radar site. He remained competitive in golf, winning local and state tournaments. Hugh was witty, caring, and giving. He loved writing verse and poetry, sharing all with family, friends, and strangers. He volunteered with numerous local organizations including Board of Adjustment and Community Soup Kitchen. His family meant the world to him, no sacrifice was too great. Survivors include his beloved wife, Phyllis (nee Denny); his loving children, Lisa Cangelosi (husband Robert) of Newton, Danielle Capuzzi (husband AJ) of Morris Plains, Michael of Washington DC, William of Dallas TX, John (wife Yucke) of Basking Ridge, and Nicole Ross of Morristown. A sister, Katherine Beck of Augusta GA, survives him. He also leaves behind 12 treasured grandchildren, Bobby, Thomas, Daniel, James, Philip, Clare, Helen, Sydney, Will, Lena, Adele, and Ian. A visitation celebration will take place on Monday, 11/8/2021 at 9:30 am at St Thomas More Church in Convent Station followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. Entombment will be at Holy Rood Cemetery in Morristown thereafter.
