Ervin Hayne Shumate, Jr., passed away at home in Huntsville, AL, on 24 February 2021. Hayne was born 22 May 1939 in Clearwater, FL, to Ervin Hayne Shumate, Sr. and Anne Menefee (Myers) Shumate. Raised in Clearwater and Fountain Inn, SC, Hayne was a graduate of the Sewanee (TN) Military Academy (now St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School) and The Citadel: The Military College of South Carolina. He pursued graduate mathematics studies at Wake Forest and Tulane Universities, earning a master’s degree from Tulane. He was commissioned into the United States Army, assigned to the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, MD. After his service, Hayne worked in applied mathematics and computer sciences. His career carried him to France and Saudi Arabia with ARAMCO and included working on the space shuttle program with Ford-NASA. He was a keen gastronome, delighting in reminiscences with friends and family over a fine meal. A lovely bass singer, Hayne shared his gift in church choirs and community chorales, and even relished an opportunity to perform Mozart’s Coronation Mass at Salzburg Cathedral. Hayne is survived by his daughter Anna Dowling Heath (ne Anne Dowling Shumate); son E. Hayne Shumate, III and Kathleen (McGinty) Shumate; granddaughter Margaret Gray Shumate; sister Anne (Shumate) Blakely and James C. Blakely, Jr.; sister Thorneton (Shumate) McKibben; niece Patricia E. (“Trisha”) Williams; nephew D. Chester (“Chet”) Williams, Jr. and family; and so many beloved friends. Due to the ongoing pandemic, a family gathering to celebrate Hayne’s life will take place later this year in South Carolina. The family gratefully requests that remembrances be made to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Madison, The Huntsville Master Chorale, or Wounded Warrior Project.
