Dwight K. Groggel, Jr, 73, of Matthews, NC, died Thursday, December 27, 2018 surrounded by family at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Born September 19, 1945 in Mobile, AL, he was the son of the late Dwight K. Groggel, Sr, and Muriel G. King. He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda, of 51 years, one sister, Barbara Sypher (Rhett), of Cumming, GA, two children, R. Scott Groggel (Charity) of Charlotte, NC and Emily G. Shepherd (Trae) of Matthews, NC, and five grandchildren. Dwight grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from St. Andrew’s High School in 1963 and then graduated from the Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, with the Class of 1967. He later earned graduate degrees from Auburn University and Marymount University. Dwight deeply loved his country and served in the USAF for 26 years. He served in Vietnam near the beginning of his career and retired as a Colonel after working for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Office of the Secretary of Defense in Washington DC. He and his wife returned to the Charleston area upon retirement, residing in Summerville, SC. He was a member and deacon at Summerville Baptist Church and loved serving his church and community. He was a voracious reader and student of history, and enjoyed playing golf and watching football and baseball. Dwight and his wife moved to Matthews, NC in 2015 to be near their children and grandchildren. They joined Carmel Baptist Church. For three short years he greatly enjoyed being near his family who brought him joy and comfort throughout his battle with leukemia. The family would like to thank our many family members and friends, and the staff of Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte for all their wonderful support during Dwight’s illness. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Dwight’s memory to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Charleston, SC, with internment at The Citadel Memorial Bell Tower Columbarium. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
