Donald Mason Stewart, M.D., 85, of Columbus, Ga., died Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Columbus Hospice House. Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at St. Luke United Methodist Church, Columbus, Ga. with The Rev. Cindy Cox Girard officiating. Private interment to follow at Parkhill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM, on Monday, November 3, 2014 at Striffler-Hamby 4071 Macon Road Columbus. Dr. Stewart, son of the late Judge Mason Stewart and Tommie Walton Massey Stewart was born December 8, 1928 at home in Columbus, GA. He attended Waverly Terrace Grammar School, Columbus Junior High School, graduated from Columbus High School, attended Auburn University, graduated from The Citadel, and The Medical University of South Carolina, and was board certified in Anesthesiology. He has been a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society, The American Society of Anesthesiologists, served as president of the Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists, member of Georgia Medical Association, and Muscogee County Medical Society. He retired from Anesthesia Associates of Columbus after practicing 25 years. He served 3 1/4 years as a U.S. Air Force officer during the Korean War. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Columbus and was lifelong member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. Other than his parents, Dr. Stewart was preceded in death by Irene Magruder Stewart, his wife of 49 years and mother of their children. He is survived by his wife, Loraine Hurdle Stewart, daughter, Patricia S. Hudspeth (Steve), son, Thomas M. Stewart ,M.D.,(Karen),son Reverend Dr.Michael R. Stewart (Jeri),and daughter Amy S. Buchner (Corey).Grandchildren include Mandy H. Walker,(Todd),Birmingham, AL, Stewart Hudspeth(Andrea)Greer, S.C., Carly Stewart, Alex Stewart, Christina Stewart, Mason Stewart (Meghan),Chelsea Grassi Maner (Chris), Savannah, GA. Chandler Grassi, Savannah, GA,. Camille Magee, Tallahassee, FL., and 2 great-grandsons, Tram and Whit Walker, Birmingham, AL. Also surviving are Loraine’s children: Burt (Leslie) Marchman, Wexford, PA and Laura (John) Stein and their children: Jordan and Jack, Broomfield, Colorado.
