Don was born on January 9, 1930 in Whitmire, SC. He was the son of James P. Couch and Ola D. McManus. Don graduated from The Citadel in 1952. He was a general contractor in Charleston for over 30 years and later the Historic Preservation Officer for the Navy at Charleston Naval Shipyard. Don was a very active member of the Toastmaster Club for many years. He was quite the character and always had a new joke or funny story to share. One of his pastimes was to read the encyclopedia always looking to learn some new word to share. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and especially his grandchildren.
Don was predeceased by his wife of over 65 years Marie C. Couch. She was the love of his life and he daily told her how beautiful he thought she was. She caught his eye after his return from The Korean War. They met at a Boarding House downtown Charleston where they would both have their meals. Once he found out she was a good cook…..that sealed the deal.
Don was also predeceased by his eldest son Donal P. Couch Jr.. He is survived by his son James Timothy Couch of Mandurah, Australia. Robin Marie Brown (Mike) of Fernandina Beach, FL.
