DeWitt W. King, Jr., ’42

DeWitt Walker King, Jr., 97, died peacefully surrounded by family members on Monday, September 24, 2018, at Roper Hospice Cottage in Mt. Pleasant, SC. He is survived by his wife, Dolores Ropp King, of Hollywood SC; his five children – DeWitt Walker King III (Debra) of Charlotte, NC, Joseph Jennings King (Barbara) of Sapphire, NC, Jane King Walsh (Steve) of Roswell, GA, Robert Miller King of Charlotte, NC, and Andrew Brown King (Jennifer) of St. Johns, FL,- who he shared with his former spouse Ola Jane Jennings King of Charleston, SC, now deceased; and two stepchildren, Deborah Stier Carson (Bob Carson, deceased) and John Charles Stier (Molly). He is also survived by eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Nell King, Callahan of Belvoir, VA, his sister, Harriet King Geer, of Spartanburg, SC; and his brother, Samuel Blackwell King, of Charleston SC. Mr. King was born on March 24, 1921, in Laurens, SC, to parents, DeWitt Walker King of McClellanville, SC, and Nell Miller King of Laurens, SC. He graduated from The Citadel in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. Upon graduation, Mr. King was awarded a commission in the United States Army. He served in World War II as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Coastal Artillery Corps as a Battery Officer. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1944, he joined his father and brother in the family business, DeWitt W. King Real Estate and Insurance, where he worked for more than 30 years. During his career as a Realtor, Mr. King served as the president of the Charleston Realtors Association. After his retirement, Mr. King lived at his Logbridge Farm property in Hollywood, SC, and devoted countless days to its improvement and beautification, lovingly cared for by his wife, Dolores, and assisted for over 40 years by Henry “Speedy” Middleton. He loved the land and the wildlife of the Charleston Lowcountry. He hosted an annual Thanksgiving picnic dinner at Logbridge Farm for neighbors, friends and family with attendance sometimes exceeding 75 people. He enjoyed the company of his fellow Citadel alumni and was an avid enthusiast of the Citadel football program. Mr. King was a faithful Christian, and a lifelong member of and contributor to the 2nd Presbyterian Church, where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder. He was active in the program of the Men of the Church providing a Christmas tree, cut from his Logbridge Farm, to the church each year. Mr. King belonged to the St. Andrews Society, and was member #6 of the Carolina Yacht Club. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, September 28, 2018, in Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street, Charleston at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Interment, churchyard. The family will receive friends Thursday in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. All family and friends are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of DeWitt Walker King, Jr. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be sent to Roper Hospice, 1483 Tobias Gadson Blvd., Suite 208, Charleston, SC 29407 or Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409.
