David Rea Lemmond, of Charlotte, NC, born on 10-24-1929, lived with honor, patience and loving commitment until his death on 8-12-2016. The eldest of 4 children born to S. Rea and M. Kathryn Lemmond of Matthews, NC, David was educated in the public schools of Matthews, Riverside Academy in Gainesville, GA, and the Citadel in Charleston, SC. David was a husband, father, grandfather, veteran, Matthews merchant and fixer of everything. His love of the natural world led him to hiking, camping, sailing and environmental activism. Although he lived most of his life in the Carolinas, he traveled the world and developed a keen appreciation for other cultures and traditions. David and Joyce, his cherished wife of 66 years, included their children in the running of their businesses in Matthews, modeling hard work and dedication to all the tasks they embraced. He was a devoted husband and parent to children David Jr., Chris, Tim, Shawn, Michelle, Melanie, and Marysia, holding ever closer together through the loss of infant Melanie and three beloved adult sons, David Jr., Chris and Tim. Dave gifted the family his love for outdoor adventure; they shared many trips together on land and sea. Perhaps his happiest times were aboard a sailboat with family close at hand. Dave’s kind bearing had a wonderful effect on all who encountered him. Those who will cherish his legacy with deepest gratitude include his beloved wife and best friend, Joyce; daughter Michelle, (husband Michael, children Pinna and Morgan); son Shawn, (wife Julie and daughters Frances and Grace); daughter Marysia (husband Jeff); daughter-in law, Laurie (children Lydia and Ben). A service to celebrate Dave’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on September 24, 2016, at the Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Church, 9704 Mallard Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC 28262. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Tim Lemmond Music Scholarship Fund, Community School of the Arts, 345 N. College St., #413, Charlotte, NC 28202.
