David Pinckney Easterling, of Beaufort, died November 9, at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC. The son of James Barnes Easterling and Mary Pinckney Easterling Powell, David was born in Greenville, SC, on August 23, 1939. He grew up in Columbia, SC, graduated from Dreher H.S. (’57), and received his degree in Civil Engineering from The Citadel (’61). David earned his Masters of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina (’68). He married Joan Lee McWaters from Montgomery, AL, in 1964. David served in the military as an Army officer for six years; in the Corps of Engineers, as an Army Ranger and as a pilot in Germany and Vietnam. He worked in national and international sales for Owen Steel Co. and Kline Iron & Steel in Columbia, SC, for 26 years, and as a financial advisor for Edward Jones in Beaufort, SC, until his passing. Residing in Lexington, SC, David and Joan loved rearing their two boys on Lake Murray. In 1999 they moved to Beaufort, SC, to be near family. Throughout his life David was an involved community leader. He devoted much of his time to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Lexington, SC, and the Parish Church of St. Helena of Beaufort, SC. He was a Rotarian for over 40 years, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a brother of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. David was a dedicated class chairman for The Citadel Foundation. He was a voracious reader of great books and often entertained others with his self-effacing candor and perceptive wit. David is survived by his wife, Joan McWaters Easterling of Beaufort, SC; his sisters, Mary Anne Easterling Haden of Hendersonville, NC, and Catherine (Cathy) Easterling Battle of Conway, SC; their husbands, Robert (Bob) Lee Haden, Jr. and Michael (Mike) Warner Battle; sons Lt. Col. David (Beau) Pinckney Easterling, Jr. of Columbus, MS, and Dr. Bruce McDowell Easterling of Columbia, SC; their wives, Elizabeth (Beth) Land Easterling and Katherine Webb Easterling; and eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Caroline Easterling, Emma Grace Easterling, David Pinckney Easterling III, Caroline Seabrook Easterling, Charlotte Simmons Easterling, Mary Pinckney Easterling, Eliza Ladson Easterling, and Cecilia Bellinger Easterling. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Copeland Funeral Service, U.S Highway 170 and Copeland Drive, Beaufort, SC 29902. The funeral service will be held at The Parish Church of St. Helena, 507 New Castle Street, Beaufort, SC 29902, on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Interment will follow the reception at the Pinckney Family Cemetery, Bluffton, SC 29910. While coming from Beaufort on Highway 278 turn left on Pinckney Colony Road then right on Calhoun Plantation Road. Follow the dirt road one mile. Cemetery is on the right. Serving as pallbearers are David’s classmates from The Citadel, James A.W. Rembert, William Lee Tigner, Alec B. McCloud, James E. Creech, Robert H. Lockwood, Dayle W. Yates, James Kinson Cook, and William D. Workman. The family requests memorials be made to St. Helena Preservation Trust, P.O.
