Coyle Burger O’Neal, 74, of Punta Gorda, Florida, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017. He was born on July 25, 1942, in Cumberland, Maryland. Coyle grew up in a military family and traveled extensively, attending first grade in Kyoto, Japan, and graduating senior high in Izmir, Turkey. Coyle earned his B.S. in Education from the Citadel, and after graduation, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He also taught math, and managed several golf courses and Smitty’s Restaurant in Venice, Florida. He worked for many years in Fort Myers, Florida, as a window clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired. After retiring, he worked part-time at the pro-shop at Seminole Lakes Golf Course, where he perfected his short game. Coyle loved to travel and shared its joy with his wife, visiting many places together after retirement. Besides traveling and playing golf, Coyle enjoyed reading and watching football (Go Canes). A special pleasure was watching his son and stepson play football for Charlotte High and his son play football in college for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Coyle also served as a church usher and enjoyed being the emcee for church events. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan; son, Coyle Hayes O’Neal, and friend, Rhonda Yates, of Fort Myers; and stepson Brock Forrest (Deirdre) Wilson, and granddaughter, Isla Susan Wilson, of Newport Beach, CA. He was also very close to his niece Amy (Kevin) Jarman and their children, Ashley and Preston, and his cousins, Tom (Elaine) Burger and Wanda (Antonio) Cahuaya. Coyle was preceded in death by his parents, Coyle Harris (Helen) O’Neal. Coyle’s memorial service will be held at New Life Family Worship, 28330 Bermont Rd., Punta Gorda, FL 33982. Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at 4 p.m., followed by fellowship in the church hall.
