Charles S. Rousek, ’68

Col Charles Stuart Rousek, 50 Obituaries for 02/14/1998 Sentinel, The (Carlisle, PA) – Saturday, February 14, 1998 Retired Col. Charles S. Rousek, 50, of 831 Claremont Road, Carlisle, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998 at home. Born Feb. 16, 1947 in Regensburg, Germany, he was the son of Elizabeth Stuart Rousek of Lancaster and the late Charles Rousek. A 1968 graduate of the Citadel, Charleston, S.C., Col. Rousek began his 28-year military career at Fort Benning, Georgia, with basic infantry officer training followed by flight school at Fort Wolters, Texas, and Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, Ga. His assignments included tours with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment as an attack helicopter pilot in Quan Loi, Vietnam; commander of H and G Troops, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Nuremberg, Germany; commander of D Troop, 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry, Fort Lewis, Washington; plans officer, Headquarters, United States Army Europe, Heidelberg, Germany; operations officer, 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis; executive and operations officer, 1st Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Bindlach, Germany; commander, 2nd Battalion, 77th Armored Brigade, Fort Lewis; force modernization officer (G6), 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis; and director, force structure and mobilization and force development studies, Department of Command, Leadership and Management, United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks (Elihu Root Chair of Military Studies). His awards included the U.S. Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Air Medal (26 awards), Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Army Service Medal, Overseas Service Medal and Senior Army Aviator Badge. Col. Rousek was a life member of the 2nd Cavalry and Blackhorse (11th Armored Cavalry Regiment) associations. He was also a member of the Board of Trustess, Alumni Association of the U.S. Army War College; Association of the U.S. Army; Cumberland Valley Chapter of the Retired Officers Association; and Rotary Club of Carlisle. In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife of 28 years, Rebecca “Bekka” Anderson Rousek; two daughters, Elizabeth of Bar Harbor, Maine, and Allison of Asheville, N.C.; and one sister, Anne Kennedy of Philadelphia. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. John’s Episcopal Church on the Square, Carlisle, with the Revs. Mark A. Scheneman and Marcia C. Wilkinson officiating. The family will receive guests afterward in the parish hall. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Feb. 19 at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with full military honors. Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Acoustic Neuroma Association, P.O. Box 12402, Atlanta, Ga. 30355.
