Clifford John Pepper, 77, of Sanford, NC, died Friday (11/22/13) at his home surrounded by his family. Born September 16, 1936 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was a son of the late Victor John Pepper and Anna Brumbaugh Pepper. After attending Duquesne High School, he enrolled at The Citadel and graduated in 1958. Upon graduation, he served actively in the Coast Guard for three years. He continued to serve in the reserves for another twelve years. He then began his career as an electrical engineer, first working for Electro-Air in Pittsburgh, Pa. and then for Trion in Sanford until his retirement in 2000. He married Sylvia Beth Jordan of Darlington, S.C. on October 17, 1959. Cliff was involved in his community in countless ways. He was an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, having served on the Administrative Board, as a trustee, a youth group leader, a confirmation mentor and a Sunday School teacher. He was also a long-time member of the church choir. He was a member of the Sanford Lions Club where he was a past president, district officer and a Lion of the Year. He cared for the children in Sanford by volunteering with the HOST program, Communities in Schools and Hand-in-Hand where he was Volunteer of the Year for the 2003-04 school year. He was a driver for Highway to Healing and Meals-on-Wheels. He was both a life-long blood donor and platelet donor for the American Red Cross. He was an avid bridge player who loved spending Thursday afternoons with his bridge buddies. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sylvia Jordan Pepper of the home; daughter, Linda Morton and her husband Robbie of Sanford; son, Mark Pepper and his wife Gina of Fayetteville; brother, Ron Pepper of Leesburg, Fl., and he is also survived by seven grandchildren. A celebration of Cliff’s life will be held on Sunday (11/24/13) at St. Luke United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends in the church parlor prior to the service.
