Dr. Chester D. Szymanski, retired CEO/president of Unilever Research MARTINSVILLE — Dr. Chester D. Szymanski, 74, died Monday (Dec. 27, 2004) after a valiant battle with leukemia at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. Born and raised in Bayonne, he resided in Martinsville for the past 45 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He received a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Syracuse; an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University; a masters degree from the University of Miami; and a bachelors degree from the Citadel. Dr. Szymanski retired as CEO and president of Unilever Research, United States. A career science innovator, he holds 18 U.S. patents and other foreign patents in the areas of food, starches and chemicals. An active member in the church and community, he was a member of the boards of Rider University, the Engineering Council of Columbia University, the Board of Overseers of New Jersey Institute of Technology, Muhlenberg Hospital and the JFK Hospital Board. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; his son, Andrew and his wife, Kathleen, of Chicago, Ill.; his daughters, Elaine Armstrong and her husband, George, of Edgewater, Susan Vincer and her husband, Peter, of Caledonia, Wis.; two grandchildren, Christopher and Lily Szymanski; sisters, Genevieve Kaczka, Marie Murowski, Helen Kopacz; and brother, Joseph Szymanski (predeceased brothers, Edward and Stephen Szymanski). Funeral services will begin 9 a.m. Thursday at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church in Martinsville.
