Charles (Charlie) Samuel Rigby III passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on February 25, 2025. Charlie is pre-deceased by his parents and grandson Hunter Lanois Rigby. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, his daughter Gail, his son Charles IV (Dana), his stepdaughter Libby (Jim) and his stepson Mark (Taryn), his seven grandchildren, Charles V (Colleen), Josie (Travis), Cason, David, Daniel, Anna & Erin, his five great-grandchildren, Guinevere, Rowan, Maeve, Owen and Addie, and his sisters, Rose Ann Weaver and Susan Staples.
Charles Samuel Rigby III was born on October 18, 1938, in Kingstree SC to Charles Samuel Rigby, Jr and Ruby Neel Rigby who resided in Manning SC. He and his two sisters moved with their parents to Columbia SC when he was a young teenager. Charlie graduated in 1957 from Dreher High School, and then went on to college at The Citadel in Charleston SC. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, he immediately went to the U.S. Marine Corps Basic School in Quantico, VA and began what would be a 20-year active duty career. During his service, he attended American University in Washington DC where he earned a Master of Science in Technology of Management degree. He served in many capacities including two separate tours in Vietnam during the conflict. He was a highly decorated veteran and retired in 1981 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps, he was a founding partner in Environmental Products Corporation and was involved in start-up operations throughout the United States, as well as in nine foreign countries. After his final retirement in 2003, Charlie and Mary Jo spent many volunteer hours delivering Meals on Wheels and working at SERVE food pantry. Charlie also served on the Prince William County Weapons Control Board and Community Service Board. His genuine love for his family, friends, community, and his faith in God were evident in all he said and did.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, March 15, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Our Saviour Oatlands, with a reception following the service at 1:00 p.m. at the Regency Clubhouse.
