Charles R. Whitlock, 88, of 400 Webber Road, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at White Oak Estates. Born August 11, 1921, in Union, SC, he was the son of the late Dudley Jean and Jennille Graham Whitlock and the husband of the late Sara McMillan Whitlock. A 1939 graduate of Union High School and a 1943 graduate of The Citadel, he owned and operated Whitlock Tire Service. He was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, the Spartanburg Lions Club, Citadel Alumni Association, and a Shriner. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theatre as an infantry officer in the 110th Infantry Regiment, 20th Division. He arrived in Europe several months prior to the Battle of the Bulge and served as a platoon leader in that conflict. Survivors include a daughter, Pam Frost and her husband Dr. Ed Frost of Spartanburg; a son, Carlisle Whitlock and his wife Kathleen of Durham, NC; a daughter-in-law, Joan Whitlock of Spartanburg; two grandsons, James F. Whitlock of Greenville, and Russell W. Kuhn of Columbia; and five granddaughters, Holly W. Moore and her husband Burton E., and Laura E. Whitlock, both of Mount Pleasant, Sally W. Williams and her husband Hunter of Greenville, Catherine K. Michael and her husband Stephen G. of Ferndale, MI, and Charlotte A. Whitlock of Durham, NC. He was predeceased by a son, Charles R. Whitlock, Jr.; and his best friends, John Joseph Smith and Paul Yearout. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 26, 2009, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church conducted by the Rev. Robert L. Brown. The family will receive friends following the service at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Citadel Development Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409.
