Charles L. Porter, 83, of Hendersonville, NC, died Monday, March 29, 2010 at his home. A native of Franklin, NC, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty years, Barbara West Porter as well as his parents, James Stephen Porter and Margaret Cunningham Porter. In 1932 at the age of six he moved to Henderson County and went on to graduate from Hendersonville High School in 1944. He graduated from the Citadel in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business and commerce. A veteran of World War II, he was with the Seabees, then transferred as a medic to the Marine Corps, then to the Army Air Corps and was finally discharged under the Navy. He received his reserve commission in the Air Force. He was formerly employed at Olin Matheson Chemical Company at Ecusta, worked in the startup of the Outdoor Lighting Department of General Electric and retired as Vice President and General Manager of J. S. Porter Distributing Company. He was an active and proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous for twenty seven years. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross for twenty years, the Henderson County Board of Equalization and Review for eight years, and the Hendersonville Planning and Zoning Board for twenty three years. He is a life member and past trustee of BPOE lodge 1616, and was member of the Hendersonville Country Club for over fifty years and had served on the country club’s board of directors. He was an avid golfer and loved the Washington Redskins and the New York Yankees. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Porter Renner and her husband, Robert, of Cornelius; three granddaughters, Chelsea McGuire Ward, of Cornelius, Christine Renner Freeze and her husband, John, of Mount Pleasant, SC, Megan Elizabeth Renner of Charlotte; and one great-grandson, John Logan Freeze, of Mount Pleasant, SC. A funeral service will be held at 4 pm, Monday, April 5, 2010 at St. James Episcopal Church with Rev. H. Alexander Viola and the Very Rev. Robert D. Fain officiating. The family will receive friends in the Stillwell Hall at the church from 2:30 until 4pm. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park.
