Lt. Col. (Ret.) Charles Laprelle Elvington, 84, of Matthews, N.C. passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Horry County, the son of the late Plan Lanneau Elvington Sr. and Neva Thelma Rowell Elvington. Lt. Col. Elvington was raised in the Wannamaker Community of Horry County and graduated from The Citadel in 1952. After graduation, he entered the military and proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force. He had a long and distinguished military career, having served in the Demilitarized Zone during the Korean Conflict and was instrumental in gaining the release of the American prisoners on board the U.S.S. Pueblo. He later served in the Intelligence Department at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Lt. Col. Elvington was predeceased in addition to his parents, by his wife, Barbara Baker Elvington, a brother, Dr. Robert E. ³Sam² Elvington, and a sister, Patricia Elvington Meares. He is survived by two daughters, Carol E. Applegate (Bill) and Jenney E. Tuccio, both of Matthews, N.C., two brothers, P.L. Elvington, Jr. of Fair Bluff, N.C. and Harold Randolph ³Sonny Boy² Elvington of Nichols; one sister, Kitty Jo Cook of Myrtle Beach; two grandchildren, Michael Charles Bizon (Margot) and Ashley Lauren Tuccio; and two great-grandchildren, Madilyn Grace Bizon and Isabelle Brooke Bizon. A graveside service will full military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Riverside Cemetery in Nichols, S.C.
