Charles L. “Deacon” Smith, 85, of Waynesboro, Va., went to his eternal Home on April 25, 2021.
Born on November 25, 1935, in Northampton, Mass., he leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Rose Marie; three sons, Charles III (Rosa), Nathan (Melody), and Thomas (Dania), ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a sister, Jeanne Willis of Tampa, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graduate of The Citadel, he had a varied career serving as an officer in the Coast Guard and administrator in the USDA and EPA. He served for ten years as Pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Retiring to the Valley, he was an active member of Wayne Hills Baptist Church. He was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed gardening, travel and sharing the good news of God’s gift of eternal life.
He praises God for his salvation through Jesus Christ and is thankful for the blessing of family, church family, friends and neighbors and all who have been praying for him. He is grateful for the good care he’s received from Augusta Health, AN&RC and Hospice of the Shenandoah. “ALL things work together for GOOD to those who LOVE Him and are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Dr., Fishersville, Va., from 6 until 8 p.m.
A service will be held at Wayne Hills Baptist Church Thursday, April 29, 2021, at 11 a.m. Burial will be held in Charleston, S.C.
