Charles Lamb Cauthen, 75, of Hilton Head Island, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, surrounded by his family. Mr. Cauthen was born on Dec. 18, 1937, in Rock Hill, S.C., to Joseph Claude Cauthen Jr. and Mary Eugenia Okey Cauthen. He attended Winthrop Training School and continued his education at The Citadel, graduating in 1960. Mr. Cauthen served in the U.S. Army for four years where he achieved the rank of captain. Mr. Cauthen began his career in the family business at the Rock Hill Lumber Company. In 1974, he moved to Hilton Head Island and began working for Sea Pines Real Estate Company. During his tenure at Sea Pines, he participated in a number of development projects. In the early 1980s, Mr. Cauthen became interested in Daufuskie Island and was instrumental in the development of Haig Point. He remained passionate about Daufuskie, its history, and its people. Mr. Cauthen will be remembered by his friends and associates as a visionary who loved people and who was devoted to his family. Mr. Cauthen was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island, where he served as an elder for many years. He was likewise an active member of the community, serving on the Rock Hill School Board and participating in the Rotary Club of both Rock Hill and Hilton Head Island. Mr. Cauthen is survived by his wife, Margaret Benedict Cauthen of Hilton Head Island; children, Charles L. Cauthen Jr. and wife, Karen and Catherine Lake Cauthen of Charlotte, N.C., Anna Cauthen Bradley and husband, Cooper of Columbus, Ga., and Caroline Elliott Cauthen of Hilton Head Island; brother, Joseph C. Cauthen III and wife, Ginny of Gainesville, Fla., and sister, Claire Cauthen Perrill and husband, John of Beaufort; five grandchildren, Julia, McClain, and Frances Cauthen, and Mary Scott and Robert McLean; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Claude Cauthen Jr.; his mother, Mary Eugenia Okey Cauthen; his sister, Cynthia Cauthen Mitchener; and his daughter, Elizabeth Cauthen McLean. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, at The Island Funeral Home. The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday at First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island.
