Charles Harold Mixon LT. COL. Charles Harold Mixon, USAF Retired, BSC. Math Physics, 85, husband of Shirley H. Mixon, died Saturday, October 20, 2007 in the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, SC. Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 2:00pm in Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Mixon was born to Basel Manley Mixon and Violet Tuten Mixon on March 21, 1922 in Yemassee, SC. He attended Yemassee High School until transferring to Christ School in Arden, NC. He then attended the Citadel in Charleston, SC until 1944; when he joined the USAAF and was sent to England to join the 8th AF in B-17s. Bombing Nazi Germany when the maximum was 24 missions and life expectancy was 6 sorties, he survived and achieved 22 missions. After the war he joined M.A.T.S. and after a remote tour in Thule, Greenland, he left the service and flew for a commercial airline, Trans Ocean. He was recalled to Korea, flew C119s from Ashiya AFB Japan, when that war was over he was sent to SAC. B47s and stationed at Lake Charles AFB, then Lowry AFB, Colorado and then PCS to McConnell AFB, Kansas. Finally to Fairchild AFB, Washington; when daughter was born in 1963, Marina J. Mixon. He retired in 1965, then immediately employable by US government air group in S. E. Asia. He joined Japan Airlines, flying Polar routes to various destinations in Europe and a brief stint with Lufthansa Lines. He lived in London for 28 years. He returned back to SC in 2005, entering the Veterans Victory Home, where he passed away. He was a benefactor to the Royal Society for Asian Affairs, RAF Bomber Command Assn., Wigmore Hall in London and the Brooke Animal Hospital in many parts of the world. A hero, a true Internationalist and wonderful representative of the USA. He is survived by his wife, Shirley and one daughter Marina J. Mixon. Memorial service to be held in Yemassee at a later date. Anderson Funeral Home is in charge.
